두 명의 아이(6살, 4살)가 999에 신고해 아버지의 목숨을 구했다는 놀랍고 또한 기분좋은 소식입니다. (999는 우리나라의 112와 119를 합쳐 놓은 것과 비슷합니다.) 제시카와 조지나는 아버지 데이비드가 의식을 잃은 상태로 피를 흘리며 쓰러지자 999로 전화해 구급차를 요청했습니다. 데이비드는 간질병 환자였습니다.
그들이 구급차를 기다리는 동안, 999 교환원은 그들과 통화상태를 계속 유지하였습니다.

Jessica: My dad’s fallen and had a bump and there’s lots of blood. 아빠는 넘어져서 부딪혔고, 피를 많이 흘려요.
Operator: Is your mum there? 엄마는 거기 있니?
Jessica: No. 아니요.
Operator: OK. How old is your dad? 아빠 몇 살이니?
Jessica: Erm, 45.
Operator: 45. And is he conscious, is he awake? 의식은 있니?
Jessica: He’s asleep. 자고 있어요.
Operator: Is he breathing? 숨쉬고 있니?
Jessica: We’re not sure. 확실하지 않아요.
Operator: Can you go check for me? 몇 가지 좀 확인해 줄래?
Jessica: OK. 네.
Operator: Thank you. How old are you, my love? 고마워. 넌 몇 살이니?
Jessica: Six. 6살이요.
Operator: Is that your little brother or sister? 동생 있니?
Jessica: My little sister, she’s four. 여동생 있어요. 4살이에요.
Operator: Right, is your daddy breathing? 그렇구나. 아빠 숨쉬고 있니? Jessica: Kind of. 조금이요.
Operator: How did he fall? 아빠는 어떻게 넘어졌니?
Jessica: We don’t know. We were watching Winnie The Pooh. 모르겠어요. 우리는 "위니 더 푸" 보고 있었어요.
Georgina: Can I speak to them? 내가 그들에게 얘기할 수 있을까?

Operator: He’s bleeding from his head. Right, is there a lot of blood? 머리에서? 많이 흘리니?
Jessica: Yes. 네
Operator: Right. Are there any neighbours near you? 그래. 근처에 이웃이 있니?
Jessica: Yes, we’ve got two next-door neighbours but we can’t go to them now. 네. 우리는 두 이웃이 있어요. 하지만 우리는 지금 그들에게 갈 수 없어요.
Operator: How come? 어째서?
Jessica: We’re meant to on-ly go there when our mummy is here. 우리는 엄마가 여기 있을 때만 거기에 갈 수 있어요.

Operator: The ambulance is on its way. Talking to me doesn’t delay it. Do you know the next-door neighbours? 응 가고 있어 나와 얘기한다고 해서 구급차가 늦게 도착하는 것은 아니야. 이웃들을 아니?
Jessica: Yes. Our neighbours are Fitch and Jo. 네. 피치와 조에요.
Operator: Can you go round to them, with the phone? 그들에게 전화로 연락할 수 있겠니?
Jessica: I’ll try. Come on, Georgina. 해볼게요. 조지나, 전화해봐.
Georgina: It’s locked. 잠겨 있어요.
Operator: Are you at the neighbours’ house? 이웃들의 집 말이니?
Jessica: No. 아니요.
Georgina: It’s locked. The door is locked. 우리 집 문이 잠겨 있어요.
Operator: The door’s locked? 문이 잠겼다고.
Jessica: We’d better find some keys.우리는 열쇠를 찾아야 겠어요.
Operator: Right, just go to your daddy and find out if he’s OK, if he’s awake yet. 아빠한테 가보려무나.
ica: No, he’s asleep. 아직도 잠들어 있어요.
Jessica: You need to find the keys to open the door. 너는 열쇠를 찾아서 문을 열어 줄 필요가 있어.
Georgina: I found some keys. 찾았어요.
Operator: Ask your sister to open the door. 언니에게 말해서 문을 열어볼래?
Georgina: Jessica said I can hold the phone. 언니가 전화기 잡고 있으래요.
Operator: Right, what’s your name, love? 맞아. 너 이름 뭐니?

Jessica: I can’t because the keys don’t fit! 안돼요. 키가 맞지 않아요.

Jessica: I’m not sure. 잘 몰라요.
Operator: Have you checked your daddy’s pockets to see if there are any keys there? Georgina, check the keys in the pockets, are there any there? 아빠의 주머니를 찾아볼래? 조지나, 거기 있니?
Georgina: I’ll try to unlock the door. 문을 열어 볼게요.
Jessica: Oh, they fit! 오, 맞아요.
Operator: Have you got it open? 열었니?
Georgina: Yeah. 네.
